The Space Ship Earth Our Childrens Future
Below are images which are composites of waste materials such as plastic bags, cell phones, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles. They were created by a Seattle based photographic artist Chris Jordan. His creations represent how small behaviors by so many of us impact our world in such a large way. What he has created is an authentic depiction of the Earth of the future, if we don’t change our ways.
This image depicts 60,000 plastic bags, the number used in the US every five seconds, a portion of which I used to make the background for this website.
This one depicts 426,000 cell phones, equal to the number of cell phones retired in the US every day.
This one depicts two million plastic beverage bottles, the number used in the US every five minutes.
This one is a Seurat painting created from many small aluminum cans. It is composed of 106,000 cans, which is what the U.S. uses in 30 seconds. This is a 70×100 foot wall. Chris says that it’s very sad, since the contents of these are mostly sugared water and piss-poor beer.
Finally we end with Chris Jordan himself with an image depicting 8 million toothpicks, equal to the number of trees harvested in the US every month to make the paper for mail order catalogs.
